NEWS RELEASE
The New Brunswick Right to Life Association held a press conference today to respond to a push by abortion advocates for a law setting up no protest zones around abortion facilities in the province. This campaign was announced April 12 by the National Abortion Federation, Washington DC.
The following is a summary of press conference comments by Executive Director Peter Ryan:
"The New Brunswick Right to Life Association does not sponsor protests in front of the Morgentaler abortion facility. On days when abortions are performed, some individuals including myself sometimes do peacefully protest the taking of unborn life.
"Over 6,000 unwanted children have been aborted at the Morgentaler clinic since it opened in 1994. That’s why we protest. We believe every child’s life is precious, we oppose violence, and and we are there to peacefully express our message of non-violence.
"Any suggestion that we represent a threat, or break any laws, or interfere with anyone’s civil liberties is completely spurious, and smears our reputations.
"One of the main excuses the abortion advocates use for a bubble zone is the false allegation that pro-lifers recently illegally trespassed on clinic property. What happened was that a pro-lifer’s hat blew off in the wind and he went to retrieve it. Speaking of hats, these people are talking through theirs!
"The right to peacefully protest is a basic human right in a democratic society. The idea of no protest zones is undemocratic and is designed to intolerantly repress a certain point of view.
"The advocacy of bubble zones has nothing to do with safety or security, and everything to do with facilitating abortion. They seek not only the licence to eliminate those who have no voice, namely the unborn, but also to silence those who would be a voice for the voiceless, namely peaceful pro-lifers like myself.
"We trust the government will not fall for this pro-abortion intolerance."
