Dear Editor:
We agree with your editorial that it is unacceptable for the provincial government to refuse to indicate which hospitals perform abortions (“Abortion Secrecy is Objectionable,” June 23). The taking of human life, at taxpayer’s expense, is the gravest of matters. The public absolutely has a right to know what is going on, and where.
The excuse that security concerns justify secrecy is a red herring. The pro-life movement in New Brunswick is strongly committed to respect toward all the individuals involved in abortion, and uses peaceful protest only. Our Association’s motto is, “Life for all, love for all.” We mean the part about love.
Our track record is one of good will toward all. Our provincial headquarters is next to an abortion clinic. Yet, as your paper reported June 21, there is no danger to employees or patients (“N.B. mum on abortion sites”).
We question two Times & Transcript statements suggesting NB has some history of security concerns. The same editorial mentioned above said, “We understand the security concerns for doctors, hospitals and patients given the history of the anti-abortion movement and protest, including here in New Brunswick.” And a June 22 news report stated, “there have been incidents of abortion recipients being harassed in the past.”
What incidents are you referring to? As someone who has worked full-time in the pro-life cause the past seven years, I am not aware of any such incidents.
We believe in peace. That’s why we are involved in this cause: to peacefully end the violence of abortion.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Ryan
