COMMENT BY PRIESTS FOR LIFE CANADA ON THE AWARDING
OF THE ORDER OF CANADA TO HENRY MORGENTALER
It is with great dismay that Priests for Life Canada received the news of the awarding of the Order of Canada to Henry Morgentaler. Morgentaler is a figure of great division in our country. He has been personally responsible for the deaths of thousands of pre-born Canadians in the past thirty-five years and has been instrumental in shredding our legal system of any protection for our most vulnerable citizens. Oblivious to the cost in broken lives of the many thousands of women and men who have been scarred by the life-long trauma of aborting a child, he has demanded that all pre-born lives be counted as worthless. He has not “desired a better country” but a country that is unique among the world in its ruthlessness to the weak and helpless.
This action by the nominating committee of the Order of Canada award calls into question the very process itself as well as the suitability of those on the nominating committee to continue holding such positions. This is especially the case with the Chairperson of the committee, Chief Justice, Beverley McLachlan. We strongly urge several actions.
1. That the Governor General not award the order of Canada to Henry Morgentaler.
2. That the announced Order of Canada award to Henry Morgentaler be immediately revoked.
3. That the process of nominations be immediately reviewed so as to prevent such travesties in the future.
4. That the actions of the Chief Justice, Beverley McLachlan be censured since by her role in this shoddy nomination process she has fatally besmirched her position as an arbiter of justice in our country.
5. That members of the Order of Canada protest both individually and collectively at this degradation of their order.
6. That members of the Order of Canada seriously consider resigning in protest and return their now much diminished award in protest at the inclusion of Morgentaler into their ranks.
We encourage everyone to inform themselves of the many and increasing statements opposing this award and to act in contacting the Governor General’s office, the Prime Minister’s office, their own Member of Parliament, the members of the Order of Canada Nominating Committee, and previous members of the Order of Canada award. Action is vital to make it clear that Canadians vocally and loudly insist that such an award to an abortionist does not reflect or protect the enduring Canadian values that we hold dear.
