NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release Jan. 16, 2007
The New Brunswick Right to Life Association reacted strongly to the news of a pending lawsuit against the Province by some abortion rights activists. The activists are attacking guidelines that restrict abortions within the province’s hospitals.
“This lawsuit is a guise for abortion on demand, something not mandated or required by any court or legislation,” said the association’s executive director, Peter Ryan. “These activists are pro-abortion advocates, not legitimate health care advocates. What they propose is based on a jaded coldheartedness toward unborn children and blindness to the adverse health impact of abortion on women’s health.”
By contrast the NB hospital guidelines represent a reasonable effort to establish medical necessity before an abortion is performed, Ryan said.
“The activists are blind to the wealth of new medical data from peer-reviewed journals showing the safety problems abortion poses for women. To mention just two, abortion greatly increases the risk of depression and subsequent miscarriage. That’s why leading British doctors have called for tighter guidelines for women seeking abortions.
“What’s more, the activists’ indifference to human life speaks volumes. Every educated Canadian knows, or should know, that what grows in a mother’s womb is a baby, not a frog or some tumor. Yet these people barrel ahead, angling for more New Brunswick children to die from abortion.”
In the face of such pro-abortion extremism, Health Minister Murphy should hold firm, Ryan said.
